THE LIGHTHOUSE STANDS WITH THOSE IMPACTED BY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The loss of a precious Baldwin County family earlier this month is a devastating reminder that domestic violence exists in our communities - and each of us can play a role in preventing it, starting with checking on our loved ones. While the signs of domestic violence may not always be obvious, you can look for subtle indicators, such as a friend withdrawing and isolating herself (or himself).

Statistics show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Often overlooked are the children—silent witnesses to violence in the home—who may suffer long-term emotional and psychological effects. Recent studies estimate that between 5 and 8.8 million children witness domestic violence each year in the United States.

If someone confides in you about abuse at home, take their words seriously. Abuse often escalates, and your support could be life-changing. Encourage them to reach out to The Lighthouse for confidential help and support at 251-947-6008.

We are thankful to all our community partners who are committed to working towards a future free from violence and abuse. Many of them came together for our quarterly Domestic Violence Coordinated Community Response Team meeting last week at Baldwin 9-1-1, where guest speaker Judge Ashley Siebert spoke about navigating DV victims through the court system.
